The oldest African-American church in New York. A vital part of the United States abolitionist movement, and was an "Underground Railway." Members included, Sojourner Truth. Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglass, Paul Robeson, Langston Hughes and W. E. B. Du Bois.

The 1,506 seat theater, opened in 1914 as Hurtig and Seamon's New Burlesque Theater, but did not reach success until 1934 when it began to offer entertainment for, by and about black people. The Cotton Club was a New York City nightclub from 1923 to 1940. The club launched or featured stars such as Fletcher Henderson, Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, Cab Calloway, Bessie Smith, the Dandridge Sisters, Billie Holiday, Lena Horne, and more.
